Professor Chung Sung Woo (Computer and Communications Engineering) at Korea University (KU), recently published his research group’s dissertation in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer (IEEE Computer). The journal is one of the most widely-read publications in the field of computer technology.
Professor Chung’s dissertation, "Battery Consumption! Energy Consumption: A Case Study with a Smartphone" proves that energy consumption is not the same as battery consumption because of the electrochemical characteristics of batteries. Yet, despite the difference between the two, energy saving techniques have not been developed taking battery consumption into account. As a result, Professor Chung’s experiment results are expected to wield great influence on re-shaping the current paradigm, which evaluated low-power technology based solely on the amount of energy usage.
The experiment of Professor Chung’s team was funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), as well as LG Electronics. The main goal of the experiment was to provide the basis to develop new low-power technology that took into account the battery consumption rate from users’ perspectives, rather than mere theory.
Professor Chung’s research team is known to have published a dissertation regarding the energy saving techniques of facial recognition technology in smartphones in the year 2011. This gives him the honor of being the first Korean to publish two research features in the same journal.
