China and the U.S. are about to see changes due to the presidential election. Xi-Jinping of China rises to be the symbol of authority as Hu-Jintao passes on his legacy to him. Barack Obama just confirmed his victory against Mitt Romney, and it appears that the U.S. hopes to see more changes.

Political issues always lead to mass attention and controversies. Undoubtedly, the presidential election in the U.S. and the administrative shift in China is the leading hottest political issue that lures all eyes on them. As in every presidential election, there is always a winner, who will eventually be tagged by the decorative status, The President. Also, the huge shift of the Chinese administration from Hu-Jintao to Xi-Jin Ping is also appearing to receive more attention along with the U.S.’s presidential election.

The Advent of the Xi-Jinping Era

China has been in the unfortunate situation where the economic growth kept declining. Chinese democrats argued that this will in turn cause China to suffer from a more dysfunctional economy. Among the national concern towards the failing economy, Xi-Jinping is receiving attention as he will be the next successor as head of state. On November 8, the national council of the Communist Party has unofficially decided Xi-Jinping as the secretary of the council. Xi-Jinping’s virtual reign will begin from March 2013.

Unlike its former political powers, Xi-Jinping pursues a high economic boost within 10 percent of the nation’s total economy. Though critical views claim this statement is rather too idealistic, Xi-Jinping is revising the problems regarding the fundamental economic structure of China as he has already experienced before while serving as a government employee. His job is to level up the China economy with more stabilized and developed commitment. According to the Hyundai Research Institite (HRI) employee Kim Young-Mi, “The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of China increased 9.43 percent from 2001 to 2010. After, it is likely to be possible that it will decrease to 7.91 percent from 2011 to 2020. Also, the total product of the mainland dropped from 9.91 to 9.45 from 1991 to 2010. It is possible that the outcome will drop even more, to 7.30 percent in 2020.”

Xi-Jinping’s Radical Economic Policy

Xi-Jinping came up with three pieces of evidence why the current economy should rise up and meet the international demand. First of all, Xi-Jinping points out that the development strategy based on an export-focused market will come to an end. It is known that the international economic growth will begin to slightly decline starting from 2015 with an overall growth of 3 percent. Likewise, the growth of export and import will be gradually be decreasing altogether from 2015. Next, Xi-Jinping highly urges the current China market to become a consumer-based economy. The Communist Party of China strongly is in favor of increasing the service industry while reproaching the exceed investment of the GDP to real estate properties. Lastly, the economic promise that the Chinese economy really needs is the qualitative growth, not quantitative as Hu Jintao once had his faith in.

Six Strategies Towards a Stronger Nation

Xi-Jinping is believed to be strongly pushing his original strategy regarding the national economic growth, international relations, economic territory, enterprise renovation, natural resources, and culture. In order to supplement the current fallacy of quantitative expansion, Xi-Jinping would likely renovate every aspect of the nationwide investment, consumption, domestic demand. In regards to international relations, China, the vastly growing G2 nation, is looking forward to creating fewer conflicts with the U.S. Rather, under Xi-Jinping’s guide, China will promote an economic companionship with the U.S. instead. Kim said, “China is seeking to recover its economic phase within 10 years. Moreover, this is a critical issue because the National Communist Party of China celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012 and noticeable economic development is expected to occur.”

Xi-Jinping is moreover taking the old maxim “Deal your enemy with another enemy” in practice in terms of expanding its economic territory. With the U.S. and other promising countries, China is anticipating to rise as the most powerful country influencing the international economy. Kim further mentioned that, “China will constantly expand its economic boundary with lasting relationships with different nations, and the first step is arranging a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) deal with these countries.” China is also planning to propel the process of making its yuan dollar into an international currency. Xi-Jinping is foreseeing that China will take the advantage over the U.S., and is making a huge effort in opening more capitalistic markets.

Concerning enterprise renovation, Xi-Jinping plans to revise various corporations under state ownership. He also finds that the distributive system needs a reform in order to strengthen the governance of the state. Xi-Jinping is considering reducing the state-owned businesses and increasing the nonofficial corporations. Besides renovating businesses, China is recently spreading its strategic investment and economic companionship with countries that appear to hold ample amounts of natural resources. Last but not least, China is planning to spread its culture worldwide to virtually conquer the entire global village. Kim said, “China already established a ‘culture-industry development plan’ in 2009. What is more is that it will keep on rearing multi-culture industry and support culture exports just to aid in spreading the Chinese culture all over the world.”

The electoral system of China is only procedural as its next leader Xi-Jinping is already preparing to have control of the vast plain of China. Whether the next leader fulfills to continue the legacy of China or to demolish it by hasty political decisions is in Xi-Jinping’s hand.

The U.S. – Democrat Barack Obama wins the White House

November 7 was a remarkable day to democrat Barack Obama and the history of American politics. In Chicago, Obama gave his remarks after confirming his victory over Mitt Romney. Now Barack Obama carries again the seal of the president of the United States for another four years. President Obama calls for the good people of America to get back to work and let the opportunities to open its door to everyone. He asserted that his duty is to restore the prosperity of America and to promote the virtue of peace. In other words, Obama reaffirms the American dream in his presidential speech. Throughout time, as people face discontent and barriers that seem impossible to get through, it is viewed that America will keep on marching under its timeless spirit.

“America, we have come so far, we have seen so much. But there is so much more to do.”

Park Gun Hong (Politics, Sogang University) said, “Barack Obama is now already used to being a president and this suggests that it is possible to make change in what particularly is an ideal politics and government.” He then went on, saying that “As for these days, the Obama administration has embodied the ideal politics, more fully than most. His winning over Romney definitely proves that the nation calls for his appearance one more time.” As Park mentioned, Obama features reforms of health-care, energy, regulation to stimulus accountability, corporate executive compensation, cyber security, and the Great Lakes.

Barack Obama’s style of managing political matters shows that he is a well-trained president who encourages his superintendents with comprehensive understanding of policies aimed towards a huge population of a large society. He realizes that the long-term, systematic problems of health care, education, and the environment cannot be solved in bits and pieces. Rather, they must be solved by dedicated efforts throughout long periods of time. Such policies must be taken on in whole, and carefully orchestrated in a manner that they bring true welfare to the society. Professor Lim Sung-Ho (Politics, KyungHee University) says, “Obama embraces the idea of what makes a good policy dealer after reading The Public Interest that was published in the summer of 1970 by Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Obama believes that by seeking to encompass the largest possible range of phenomena and concerns of people, he should be able to bring general happiness.” Yet public issues arise too complex for one man to solve. Professor Lim further explained, “Social systems are often intricate and complicated because it did not appear as a result of abrupt change. Instead, the social system is a firm stage which stands as an unbreakable idea. Therefore, regarding the fundamental shape of the system, a good policy maker should set up elaborate rules and incentives or pressures in making policies. Obama is an extraordinary example that I can speak of.”

Obama, as the head of the U.S., is undertaking to see more changes in macroeconomics policies. In the past, democrat presidents pursued to encourage free market in the stance of neo libertarian. However, Obama resists the radical economic policies which heavily rely on the free market. This suggests that he will push government officials and institutes to come up with a policy that manages economy without limiting the freedom of market. Obama administration believes that capitalism and the idea it possess is highly unstable when it comes to the lives of underprivileged people. It is likely to be seen that in the future, Obama, will lead the U.S. economy to a more controlled, stabilized economic state.

Xi-Jinping and Obama’s Approach toward Korea

Xi-Jinping has experienced the importance of the relationship between China and Korea. Back in the year of 2005, as a secretary of the head of state, he had officially visited Korea. Then, in December 2009 he visited Korea as the vice head of state. Throughout official and unofficial meetings with Korean authorities, Xi-Jinping has accured positive relationships with Korea. Xi-Jinping himself actively exhibited a rigorous effort in enhancing the relationship with Korea by attending the ceremony of the 20th anniversary between China and Korea. It is known that Xi-Jinping is pushing forward the FTA with Korea, in order to strengthen the bond. Yet it is crucial to not neglect the political and national security Korea can seek while maintaining the positive relation with China. Korea is currently in the midst of an imminent conflict with its once-brotherhood country, North Korea. It is of great concern whether Xi-Jinping also considers North Korea as China’s “best friend.” Korea’s role is to come up with policy towards North Korea which even China can accept.

Barack Obama, perhaps he is better known as a president who mentions Korea more than dozens of time during his past speeches. For sure, Barack Obama aided in the very positive relationship in which both Korea and the U.S. could cherish for the past four years. Now, as he sits for another four years, the friendly relationship between the U.S. and Korea is expected to continue to develop in a much safer and productive way. President Obama is considering pushing the position of North Korea to its edge. It is likely that the U.S. would force North Korea to withdraw its nuclear weapons and related technologies, or to rather remain as a political outcast in the international society. As he is re-elected, this time Korea is looking forward in terms of alleviating the conflicts that spontaneously occur with North Korea.
