The first Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS) Academy was held from August 1 to 10. Hosted by KU Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS), the program aimed to fulfill the need of research interchanges within Korean Studies, and to support in discovering new researchers. The specific programs of the Academy were as following: a special lecture tracing the current orientation and findings of Korean Studies, a research presentation in which both the students and professionals of diverse fields could participate in, and a DMZ tour to reflect upon the history and peace of Korea.

RIKS Academy was prepared by KU and the PONY CHUNG foundation—both institutions signed a contract to “support and promote Korean studies” in May. Until the end of May, the Academy had chosen 20 graduate students from 16 universities, and seven countries to participate in the event. RIKS Academy provided a forum in which students were given the chance to discuss cumulated research accomplishments with succeeding scholars, and extended the horizon of research on Korean Studies. “The presentations and debates were all very in-depth.The participants found the academy very helpful,” said Baek Jin Woo, research manager of RIKS.
