The final round for the first Korea University (KU) Idea Festival, Jiseong Balgwang, was successfully held on May 19. This festival, hosted by KU Students’ Office and KU Weekly, aimed to provide an agora in which students can communicate creative and innovative ideas to solve social problems.

With a total of 44 teams consisting of three people competing in the first round, the top six teams were given the chance to present their ideas in the final round. The finalists were also given the chance to meet up with Song Gil Yeong, vice-president of Daum, and Kim Tae Won, team leader of Google Korea, to receive feedback on their ideas respectively.

The social problems that the participating teams could choose from to provide an innovative solution were as follows: doubling the population of Korea and decreasing 1°C on the average climate of Earth. All six teams were given approximately 25 minutes on stage. They first presented their ideas on the agenda and then received questions on their presentation from the judges and the audience.

Team “Gwangbal Jiseong” was voted the grand prize. Under the agenda of “decreasing 1°C on the average climate of Earth,” the team presented the implementation of wind roadways to lower the temperature of cities. “It feels awesome to be awarded in a great and meaningful competition like this,” said Kang Min Hyeok (’16 Interdisciplinary Studies), team leader of Gwangbal Jiseong. Along with a 3,000,000 won worth prize, the team will be given a lab in π Village to build up on their ideas.
