As a part of Korea University (KU) President Yeom Jae Ho’s ambitious plan to revolutionize KU, the school has recently announced its plan to construct a new building called “SK Future Hall” in Anam campus. This five-story building will consist of roughly 100 discussion rooms, instead of conventional lecture halls.

The unprecedented idea of building a place that is reserved specifically for discussion among students was first hatched when the President of SK Group donated 20.3 billion won to KU back in 2005. Although the plan was off to a rough start due to insufficient funds, the school now expects the construction to start this year and finish by 2018.

What sets SK Future Hall apart from other buildings that were also sponsored by major firms, namely Centennial Memorial SAMSUNG Hall and LG-POSCO Business Hall, is its unique purpose in fostering students’ creativity and critical thinking through teamwork and discussion. This is seen as an attempt to break away from rote memorization that is deeply entrenched in Korean schools.

In addition, KU is planning to take one step further and build a so-called ”Dream Factory,” a facility reserved exclusively for student entrepreneurs on the campus. Made up of 30 to 40 container boxes, this will provide resources and a place where students can get together and start a company of their own.
