Korea University (KU) Anam Hospital and Korea Brain Research Institute (KBRI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on October 2 to make way for the full-blown operation of Brain Bank of Korea at KU Anam Hospital. 


Through this agreement, both institutions will cooperate on fields such as education on the standardization of the collection and preservation of brain tissue and bodily fluids through autopsy and biopsy and exchange training of researchers, academic exchange programs such as collaborated research, seminars, and workshops.
 
KU Anam Hospital is an experienced medical institution in the area of cohort research on mental illnesses as it has hosted ‘Mood Disorder Cohort Research’ for the first time in Korea last year. 
 
In addition, KU Anam Hospital will participate in the promotion of donation along with KBRI by collecting mental illness related brain-derived substances and construction of related clinical information database (DB).
 
KBRI personnel has stated that, “The rapid changes in the social environment and increase in the average life expectancy have led to an increase in brain disease related social and economic loss which call for an investigation into the causes of brain illnesses and therefore there is an urgent need for a development of brain tissue supply and demand system.”
