Korea University’s (KU) Human Rights Festival has started in People’s Square. The festival is a three-day long event that started on October 6 and will end on October 8. Modagitbi is a Korean word which means making everyone happy. The festival was motivated by the Human Rights Cultural Gathering organized by last year’s KU Student Association (KUSA). Through this cultural festival the current KUSA, Jieum, wants to advertise different organizations that exist on campus to help socially discriminated or disadvantaged people, but is not well known to students. Jieum, alsowants to bring attention to issues related to human rights in general.


There will be a formal Human Rights Manifesto recited on the People’s Square on Thursday 1:00 P.M. Apart from this formal declaration, Jieum,triedto shed off serious images sometimes associated with human rights movements and tried to make the concept more accessible to people. Entertaining programs were put in to place such as the Open Your Closet Fashion Show, orchestra from the Hanbit School for the Blind, interview with the renowned film director KimCho Kwang Soo, and much more.
 

This year’s festival also focused on issued related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). “Members of KU shall respect the sexual identity and orientation of others, and shall not infringe their rights. They shall understand the differences in sexual identity or preferences and shall not formulate unjust prejudices against others,” announced Jieum on their manifesto.
