The Korea University (KU) Student Council of Political Science and Economics opened up a press conference on September 23 at People’s Square. The conference was held with regards to the remarks of Professor Joung An-Ki (Department of Economics) that seemed to advocate the policies of Imperial Japan during the Korean colonization period.

According to the campus wall poster on West Gate, Professor Joung had made comments in one of his classes called “Economic History of East Asia”, which defended the actions of the pro-Japanese groups, abased the Korean comfort women, and belittled the independence activists during that era. For that the student council demanded three main actions toward the professor as follows: to give an official apology toward the patriots and the victims of sex slavery, to dismiss the professor from his position, and to take serious reexamination concerning the employment procedure.

As a response to this situation, the dean of the Department of Economics posted an announcement on September 24 that apologized for what had happened. Nevertheless, the Student Council of Political Science stated that they felt the actions taken were insufficient, and that the problem should be handed more actively. “I felt regrettable that this incident had occurred precisely at KU, where we consider ourselves as representatives of our nation, our people,” said Lee Jin Sun (’15, Spanish Language and Literature).
