On April 16 of last year, hundreds of high school students were killed in the sinking of the passenger ship, Sewol. One of the teachers who bravely stayed behind the ship to evacuate the students on board was KU graduate Jun Su-Young  (’85, Korean Language Education). Jun could have saved her life, but chose to remain on the ship to help confused students, who were not informed by the captain that the ship was sinking.

In memory of Jun and her selfless act of love for the students on the ferry Sewol, a group of her fellow  Korean Language Education major Class of 1985 graduates, with the permission of the KU, have raised funds to establish a "Jun Su-Young Lounge" in the fourth floor of the College of Education Building.

"We want to remember the self-sacrifice shown by Jun Su-Young," said the representative of the group of Jun's college colleagues who are involved in the project. Construction is set to start in the fall, and the remaining funds are planned to be used in establishing a scholarship named as “Jun Su-Young scholarship”.
