As we head into the final stretch of 2023, we find ourselves at the end of another year teeming with highs and lows. The blend of excitement and wistfulness, the delicate dance of emotions that accompanies the close of every December resurfaces. Yet, amidst the ebb and flow of emotions, a prevailing sense of resilience emerges. In tune with this spirit, the December issue of The Granite Tower (GT) attempts to encapsulate and evoke the intricate concoction of emotions experienced during this season, one that urges us to hang in there and look forward to the possibilities of the future.

Considering how Korea University (KU) is a global melting pot, we interviewed four international students to learn more about how they spend the December holidays in their home countries. Taking a more contemplative stance on the theme, our Cover Story takes a somber yet crucial look at the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine in hopes of fostering awareness and providing insightful perspectives on this complex issue. Shifting our focus closer to home, we featured a Special Opinion for the first time written by an Institute of Foreign Language Studies (IFLS) professor hoping to bring to light their importance in aiding KU’s internationalization. Echoing this sentiment, the Opinion article on the next page tackles the broader issue of boosting the international student population without addressing the pressing concerns of current students first.

Last but not least, my fellow editors and I took the time to reflect on our time and experiences here at GT for GT Spotlight, and express gratitude to those who shared the journey with us over the past two years. As I reflect on the swift passage of this semester, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the reporters, editors, and readers of GT – thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Happy Holidays, and remember to hang in there – brighter days await in the new year!
