During the course registration process, it is a common struggle for students at Korea University (KU) to find a course that aligns with their interests. Consequently, in this September issue, The Granite Tower (GT) aims to feature four KU students to share their experiences of academic enjoyment, with the intention to motivate other students to rise and shine in their respective fields of study. Even though academic interests may vary among students, this article aims to provide a useful reference for students during the add-drop period and beyond

Kim Jieun (‘22, Division of International Studies)

I would say that the most intriguing course must be Understanding Chorus Music and Vocalization taught by Professor Han Gyuwon (Institute for General Education). This course aligns perfectly with my expectations for a general studies course at the college level. It is divided into two main components: the first portion focuses on comprehending the distinctive features of music from various periods, such as the Baroque and Romantic Eras, while the second half involves practical vocal exercises and collective performances as a choir. As someone who enjoys singing, the opportunity to develop vocalization skills and engage in group performances with assigned roles has been immensely enjoyable.

Jang Saerin (‘22, English Language and Literature)

Computer Programming II with Professor Yu Yong Jae (Department of Computer Science and Engineering) was the most captivating course I have taken at KU. The primary objective of the course was to delve into the fundamental syntax of Python programming language and apply this knowledge to the creation of graphs and visualization via a computer platform. My pre-existing interest in this field was further intensified due to Professor Yu’s incorporation of humorous anecdotes and unique insights during his lectures. Rather than solely relying on traditional lecture-style teaching, Professor Yu brought in some intriguing practice problems, which ensured that the classes were never monotonous. Furthermore, he displayed a willingness to adapt the course schedule to accommodate the needs of the students, emphasizing a focus on learning rather than being overly concerned with grades. For those of you who are interested in learning Python but are worried about not being able to keep up with your peers, Computer Programming II with Professor Yu will undoubtedly meet your expectations.

Je Jungwon (‘23, Business Administration)

Among all courses I have taken, Climate Crisis and Sustainable Development with Professor Lee Ugyun (Department of Environmental Science and Ecological Engineering) was the most academically interesting course. Before the mid-term examination, the course featured guest lectures by experts in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), which proved to be challenging yet highly meaningful. After the mid-term examination, students engaged in a team project aimed at applying sustainable development goals in Seongbuk-gu, such as creating an eco-friendly trash bin in Chamsari-gil. Thus, if you are willing to interact with professionals from diverse environmental fields and are confident in participating in a team project for half a semester, this course may be the course that you are looking for.

Moon Siyun (‘23, Mathematics Education)

Liberty, Justice, Truth is a required course that all freshmen need to take, but this course with Professor Won Doyeon (Department of Economics) can provide you with a unique and enriching experience. Professor Won’s passion for debate is evident, as he actively challenges the viewpoints of each student and offers constructive feedback to enhance their ideas. Even though Professor Won sometimes exceeds the allotted class time, he teaches beyond the curriculum, expanding students’ knowledge. Hence, Professor Won would be the best choice for students who have a fervor for debate and a desire to delve into the intricacies of the subject.
