Television and films are not the only places cliffhangers exist. In fact, cliffhangers lurk in every corner of our lives, from something as dull as waiting in line, to something as stressful as job applications. Basically, nobody can know for certain the next stages that life has to offer, and this very “human” experience is interpreted differently among individuals. For the June issue, the Photography Department shared their very own thoughts on the matter of everyday cliffhangers, viewed through their camera lenses.

The expression “cliffhanger” is believed to have originated from the idea of a character literally left dangling from the edge of a cliff. In novels, cliffhangers create suspense and leave readers hanging with abrupt endings. In connection with June’s theme, I tried to showcase visual representations of the concept of cliffhangers around us through my lens. With either the camera positioned above the subject and angling downwards, or through photographs taken from high up, I captured what it would look like if you were hanging from a precipice, suspended in the air, and peering down into the unknown depths below.

For the final photo essay of the semester, I decided to capture the cliffhangers I see all around me. As a nature lover, I have the distinct pleasure of getting to see the true scope of how awe-inspiring our world is. While most cliffhangers may be anxiety-inducing, in this photo essay I tried to show the cliffhangers which induce thrill and excitement. In a world so concerned with pressure and stress, I instead decided to shift my focus over to the excitement and beauty of being on the edge of a cliff or looking up at one. While it is exceedingly easier to choose stress, during the final month of the semester I am instead choosing to focus on the more freeing aspect of looking at the world from such a privileged vantage point.

As the final days in the spring semester of 2023 approach, the board of editors and I prepare to bid farewell to our beloved serial drama of The Granite Tower (GT). Our cherished moments of attending the Annual Ko-Yon games as press, conducting interviews with professionals, and getting through the notorious training sessions will forever be treasured in our university lives. With the winds of change blowing, the next GT reporters will continue captivating readers with engaging articles. For June’s issue, I captured some of the treasured histories of our past, leaving behind a legacy for future generations to enjoy.
