Korea University (KU) is bringing battery waste into the spotlight. The BK21 FOUR Research and Education Team of the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies, in collaboration with the University Research Institute Industry Collaboration Center (URIC), is recruiting Green Ambassadors to research, monitor, and promote better battery waste management on KU’s campus.

The new recruitment program follows the Green Ambassador Idea Contest held in December 2022, where participants led KU’s first comprehensive research on the state of on-campus battery waste. It was spearheaded by Professor Seo Jieun (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences), who was shocked to learn how poorly managed batteries were. “The conditions of some of these collection bins were appalling. Different types of batteries were jumbled into one big pile, with regular trash littered throughout,” said Professor Seo. “One bin was abandoned for nearly three years.” Based on this research, the four teams each presented their unique solutions on how to improve the situation.

The winning team, comprising Kang Myeong Jung and Lee Jeongmin, created a promotional video to educate people on the proper way to recycle old batteries. They identified the lack of awareness among people as the major obstacle to effective recycling. The team believed that spreading the necessary information is the most critical step towards improving recycling conditions. “While having a robust recycling system in place is important, it is equally crucial that people understand its significance and are motivated to take action.” Overall, the team's approach highlights the significance of education and awareness in creating a more sustainable future.

Professor Seo emphasized that while the environmental impacts of unmanaged batteries have been known for quite some time, the rising importance of sustainability and environmental protection makes these projects especially timely. She hopes to collaborate with businesses and local governments to expand the impact of their research. Professor Seo further encouraged students to take progressive action in proper battery recycling and management. “I believe all KU students are more than capable of taking the lead in doing what is responsible for our planet.” The Green Ambassador recruitment applications are open till May 15 to all KU students.
