Most Memorable Articles, Future Expectations, and More

It’s high time The Granite Tower (GT) cover journalists from Korea University (KU) for its Voice on Campus section. Interviewing three students across different magazines, grades, and majors—including a reporter from GT—this article lets us in on the reporters’ most memorable articles, as well their expectations and hopes for their respective magazines going into the new year.

Hailing from The HOANS

Choi Hye Ji (’20, Political Science and International Relations)

The HOANS is not a newspaper that covers a diverse array of events but strives to focus on each incident it covers as fully as possible. As a reporter in the press department of the magazine, I try to focus on adding as much depth to my articles—drawing upon official reports, statistics, and other articles, rather than being worried about whether my articles will still be relevant by the time they are published. In this way, the press department chooses topics that are meaningful from our standpoint, instead of focusing on trendy issues. Though certainly not an easy read, you’ll find that our articles are worth reading. My favorite article, I would say, is titled “The Controversy Surrounding the Women’s Quota System—Equality or Discrimination?” Being a sensitive topic, I followed the issue extremely closely, doing immense research and losing a few nights of sleep over it. Thanks to this article, however, I grew the most as a reporter. As for my future goals and aspirations for the magazine, all journalists at The HOANS have the same mindset going into every year, every month, and every day, which is to publish articles of the highest quality. In the future, I hope The HOANS will continue to grow as a magazine, never straying from its values of fairness and depth.

Hailing from The Korea University Weekly:

Lee Wonho (’18, Interdisciplinary Studies and Business Administration and Management)

I am the head of the press department at The Korea University Weekly. Regarding our magazine, I would say its biggest advnatage is encountering numerous diverse opinions daily through interviews. I, for one, have met notable individuals such as Kim Sang-wook, director of the Korea Cultural Center, which can be credited to the magazine.

Of all the articles I’ve written thus far, I would say that the graduation exhibition of the 1939 Department of Design and Sculpture was my most memorable article. Released before the exhibition opening, the article was then a struggle to write, as I had no clue what the exhibition would look like. Upon visiting the completed exhibition, however, I was able to gain a better understanding of my article humorously enough—better understanding the artists’ intentions in creating their works.

Regarding the future of our newspaper and newspapers in general, it is falling behind. With social media sites like Everytime, few students ever look to The Korea University Weekly first. I have yet to be pessimistic, however, as good articles always bring in readers in the end. Therefore, my goal is to create a solid press section—a given for any editor.

Hailing from The Granite Tower (GT)

Kwon Keun Young (’20, Health Policy and Management)

"The Approval of the World's First Malaria Vaccine" in the 2021 December issue is the most memorable article I have written as a GT reporter. It carries particular meaning for me, as researching this topic made me realize that I wanted to pursue a career in global health organizations (e.g. the World Health Organization (WHO)). Regarding my goals as a reporter this year, I hope to interview more individuals face to face. Interviewing people from all different walks of life really expands your horizons and shifts the way you think. I also aim to write articles covering a wider range of issues, writing outside of my comfort zone and taking on issues that I am not familiar with. For example, I have yet to dip my feet into political conflicts, gender issues, or climate change issues, all of which I am excited to explore this year.
