Everyone has no doubt heard of the importance of liberal arts. It is probably too cliché that you might be trying to flip this page to move onto another article now. However, it is time for us to shed a light on it again and ask ourselves how much it is intertwined to our lives. What do Korea University (KU) students think about liberal arts?

Kim Dayoung (’13, Biotechnology)
As a student whose major is biotechnology, it is not very easy to have a chance to study
liberal arts. However, I think everyone has to expose themselves to liberal arts as it aims to
contemplate human nature. However, I think liberal arts constantly has a danger of being
abused. It also has great possibility of being misinterpreted according to each individual’s
own standards. I think it would cause a lot of risk to approach liberal arts without much
depth of knowledge.

Kim Hye-Won (’14, Russian Language and Literature)
I normally get the opportunity to approach liberal arts by taking lectures or reading books. I
am particularly interested in sociology and psychology. "How to Read Movies", "Comparison
of East Asian Culture and Literature", "A New Approach to Korean History", and "Russian
Literature Study" are the lectures that I found interesting. I think it is problematic that
people are neglecting liberal arts as science and technology are developing. In fact, many
universities are getting rid of the courses that are related to liberal arts because they are
not helpful for employment. I think liberal arts is important in that it studies the most
fundamental features of human beings.
