The world was indeed shocked at Meghan Markle’s remarks about the British royal family. Allegations of racism and Markle’s suicidal thoughts, the two main controversies, were enough to reveal the hidden problems of the royals. However, it has since been debated whether Markle’s handling of the royals’ internal problems was ideal. In fact, some see Markle leaving the royal family with her husband, Harry, as a childish mistake. Markle’s assertions seemed to gain sympathy from the public in the beginning, but after several rebuttals and analyses from different perspectives surfaced, they are being considered unbelievable by the British public.

On January 8, 2020, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Markle, Duchess of Sussex, announced on Instagram their official decision to withdraw as “senior members” from the royal family of the United Kingdom (UK). Although a twelve-month review period was granted to the couple, they did not take the opportunity, and “Megxit” – a compound word describing Markle’s exit from the royal family – was confirmed on February 19, 2020. A year later, on March 7, the couple talked about “why they had to leave” the Buckingham Palace as guests of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Targeting the British royal family, Markle disclosed several shocking experiences that she had as a member. Markle claimed that the palace raised “concerns and conversations” about how “dark his skin might be when he’s born” in 2019, referring to the potential skin color of the couple’s son Archie. Moreover, she professed that she considered suicide because she was no longer allowed to be socially active. Apparently, Markle’s passport, driver’s license, keys, and more were confiscated with the approval of the royal family. Although she had asked for help such as therapy, she could not get any.

At first, the public sided with Markle, but as constant criticism from the British press gnawed at her allegations, the general opinion rather fell on the palace’s side, and the couple was deemed “stunningly candid,” according to The Daily Mail. The problem was that the public had already viewed Markle as failing to accustom herself to the royal standards, such as being uneducated about how to greet the queen respectfully. The negative sentiment persisted, with Markle’s choice to expose the royal family’s internal problems on broadcast television being called questionable.

While Markle and her husband were criticized by some, the American cable channel Lifetime announced a plan to film their third movie about the couple. The channel proposed to reveal details about “Markle’s growing isolation and the Firm (the royal family) not doing enough to protect them from the attacks by the British press.” Likewise, others from outside of London believed that the royal culture of the UK was cause for the couple’s flight and that their disclosure was justified.

It is a well-known fact that not only does the British royal family accommodate an extremely conservative culture, but the UK press also strongly defends the royals. The values of her new family must have been difficult for Markle to accept, who grew up in the Land of the Free. However, she should have at least been prepared to accept the consequences of being in a senior position and not throw a tantrum about the responsibilities of a Duchess. The palace holds full responsibility for their wrongdoings regarding their racially discriminatory conversations; except for that reveal, however, Markle’s interview was nothing more than a careless outburst.
