On March 12, Korea University (KU) and Hyundai Engineering signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the development of an intelligent design automation, setting a stepping-stone in the development of Future Plant Design Technology. Han Dae-hee, director of Hyundai Engineering’s Engineering Center, and Moon Doo-hwan (Engineering Information Fusion Lab) participated in the signing ceremony held at KU.

Through the MOU, Hyundai Engineering and KU will recognize Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) drawings using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and will cooperate for the next two years. KU, with its abundant experience and expertise in AI design information recognition field, is expected to significantly contribute in terms of reducing design errors by improving the accuracy of drawing recognition. P&ID is an engineering drawing that plays the most fundamental role in the plant industry, a schematic diagram of the relationship between devices, piping, and instrumentation (control systems) that make up the process. It is expected that it will be able to contribute to accurate estimates and prevent incorrect construction.

An official from Hyundai Engineering said, "Through this R&D cooperation with Korea University, we are planning to lay the foundation for future plant design technologies based on AI and Machine Learning (ML) and secure differentiated competitiveness through the development of plant design technologies." The MOU seems to mark a solidarity that will contribute to a significant step towards a brighter future in the field of Future Plant Design Technology.
