Midterm exams are finally over and, meanwhile, May has come aside of us. With a glorious weather for outdoor activities and all the blooming flowers and fresh green, May has been thought as a month with energy and warmth. Festivals are unceasing, and couples start their new family in this month. People express their gratitude and love on Parents’ Day, Teacher’s Day, and Children’s Day. Indeed, May is the month of joy.

Yet, for some of Koreans or many of them, this May might come as harsh reality. The tragedy of sunken ferry in the Yellow Sea left tremendous shocks and indelible marks on the survived, the bereaved and people of the peninsula. Deep sorrow and sympathy has weighed down my hometown. It was unbelievable that it is not anymore possible to see those boys and girls in lovely uniforms. For some while, a heavy grief dominated me and, for other moments, such grief turned into the burst of rage or vanity.

Amidst such feelings, one thought has become evident: this shall not be repeated. Including KU students who are reading this article, I believe people would agree that this must not happen again. Yet, knowing is not enough as Korea University (KU) seniors once said, “We refuse the abnormal intellectuals deprived of actions.” It is, but we are, yet, students and may feel incompetent to do so. Still, we can start from our own position. Remembering the little bodies frozen under the cold sea and fixing the thought of making the world without such unblown children in our minds will be a small but significant step.

May little souls rest in peace and love.
