Korea University (KU) is offering international graduate students an opportunity for a scholarship through the 2014 Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program. Applicants are required to hand in all the necessary documents by March 14. The final results on the scholarship will be announced on June by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED).

Up to 20 candidates from all the quota-assigned countries will be selected by KU, and then subsequently recommended to the NIIED. Scholarships for all candidates are not guaranteed, as the NIIED has the final say on the matter. A list of departments is available on the KU website so that interested individuals can see whether their fields of study are eligible for scholarship.

Meanwhile, there are certain conditions that applicants must adhere to. First off, pregnant individuals are not eligible for application. In addition, applicants who have enrolled in a university, whether with an undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, or exchange program, in Korea will also be disqualified from the GKS program.

Peter Shin (13’, Business), an international student in KU currently enrolled in the undergraduate program, expressed his opinions about the scholarship program, “Though some who fail to meet the requirements for the program may feel that the restrictions are unfair, I think that NIIED has the rights to impose whatever conditions they want. However, it would be nice if there was a scholarship program for undergraduates.”

More information on the GKS program can be found on the NIIED website and KU portal. Contact is available through the Academic Affairs Team of the Graduate School of KU via phone: +82-2-329-1358 or email: graduate1@korea.ac.kr.
