On February 3, 2014, the fifth conference of the Tuition Fee Deliberation Committee was held, but the result unfortunately turned out to be incongruity of two opposite arguments. On one side is Korea University (KU) which insists on maintaining the tuition fee of College Divisions, yet increasing by 3percent in the tuition for the entire Graduate School. On the other side is the Student Council, which asks for a decrease by as much as 6.6 percent in both College Divisions and Graduate School. After intense debate, the university became the final victor.

The requirements of those two sides failed to reach agreement in the four prior negotiating sessions. Eventually in the fifth turn, the conference was canceled with the Student Council walking out in protest. In the interview, Choi Jongun ('11, Mechanical Engineering), the KU President for Student Council stated, “We considered that the debate in the Committee was barely limping along, and left the room. It was those six representatives from the school and the expert who passed the school’s proposal.”

One reason for such decision is the inequity in the number of representatives. There are 13 members in the Tuition Fee Deliberation Committee—six from Student Council, six from KU, and one expert selected by KU President. What Choi hopes to claim is that there are seven members that actually represent the university while they have only six. “There cannot be any improvements with unequal Committee composition,” added Choi. Though reducing tuition fee had not been acquired, the Student Council is urging to expand scholarship for students.
