Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn't always the

case. With a warm-hearted story, Monsters University will greet its viewers with a retrospect

towards the times Mike and Sullivan spent at university getting to know each other.

The movie looks at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University−when they weren't necessarily the best of friends. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they could not stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Mike enters Monster University(MU) to become a “scarer”. A scarer is a prestigious job in the monster world. This is because children’s screams are used for energy in the monster world and it is the scarers’ job to produce the screams. Only fearsome monsters were considered adequate for the job because they have to enter the human world and harvest children’s screams. Can Mike become one too?

Mike’s longing to become a scarer had started from the time he was six years old when he visits Monsters Inc., the most famous scaring company, on a school field trip. Approximately eleven years later, Mike is a scare major at MU. Sullivan, who is called Sulley, was also at MU. He was an arrogant large furry blue monster who joins the prestigious Roar Omega Roar fraternity, while Mike
joins Oozma Kappa, a small fraternity made up of misfit monsters that were removed from the scaring program due to their “un-scariness.” Mike and Sulley’s rivalry causes them to get eliminated from the scare program which motivates Mike to join the scare games with a reluctant Sulley and the incompetent Oozma Kappa. The scare games is a competition between MU students to determine the most fearsome team. Success and disappointment is out there for Mike and Sulley as they start a journey towards discovering their real selves.

The movie tries to convey a message that we are all different and we can solve all problems using these differences to our advantage. Standard popular does not bring success after all. Even people who seem useless and unnoticeable can go through all hardships when they are together. This can be seen in the movie when Mike joins an unpopular fraternity, with unsociable but kind members, and manages to effectively face hardships thrown in his way.

Appearance does not determine all of a person’s character. Anything is possible if you have faith in
yourself. Mike is always left out from anything “cool” (like becoming a scarer) since childhood. It is truly touching when the movie shows the process of how Mike overcame this to scare with what is inside, not on the outside.

Monsters University holds great significance because Pixar has come back after more than 10 years with a prequel to Monsters Inc., which was released in 2001. Monsters Inc. was an award-winning mega hit. The movie’s main audiences back then are university students now so the movie is guaranteed at least mediocre success. Its viewers can relate with the movie much more easily, being familiar with the story that follows Monsters University. Also, Monsters University can attract new watchers of Monsters Inc because viewers will want to see what happens after.

Monsters University has a simpler plot than Monsters Inc. The plot is mainly about Mike and Sulley finding their place in life and having faith in themselves. Children and all human kind are portrayed as something dangerous and unrelated to the daily lives of monsters in Monsters University . The movie focuses mainly on the lives of Sulley and Mike.

Reception of MU

Monsters University was welcomed with positive reviews when it aired in the United States. The movie has received a 78 percent approval rating on a widely acknowledged review website, Rotten Tomatoes. The site states that, “It doesn’t scale the heights of Pixar’s finest efforts, but Monsters University is still funny and thoughtful family entertainment for viewers of any age.”

Pixar had been considered to have lost its touch and not have the brilliance of past hits like Toy Story and The Incredibles, but Monsters University was able to hit the average. The film may be absolutely adored by young children, while it might be moderately enjoyed by adults. The movie may not have dark wit headed towards the adult world, but is still quite original to watch.

Monsters University was a heartwarming story of friendship, trust and belief in one’s abilities. The plot was pretty straight forward and there were no major twists, besides one near the ending of the story. Even though the movie may have been made for young children, adults can also enjoy it. Monsters University is a hit for a prequel of the mega grossing movie Monsters Inc.

For those who have watched and enjoyed Monsters Inc, Monsters University will be a good choice to kill time and have a full-hearted laugh. It will remind you of times back when you were young enough to be fully engrossed in cute animation movies.
