Starting from the second semester of 2013, Korea University (KU) is eliminating curfew in dormitories. Students had been discontent with the previous curfew system which started from 12:30 A.M. to 5:00 A.M. However there is a difference between the elimination between girl and boy dormitories. Boys are absolutely free from the curfew, allowed to move in and out from the dormitory. Girls have a curfew from 2:00 A.M. to 5:00 A.M.

Before the curfew was lessened, many KU students chose to stay up all night outside the dormitory instead of meeting the strict curfews. This act was considered to be more dangerous than having a curfew and over 98 percent of daily complaints to KU dormitory was about lessening or abolishing the curfew.

There has been a lot of disapproval from female KU students who use the dormitory regarding their curfew. The reason girl’s dormitory still keeps the curfew is because there had been a sexual harassment incident in Pusan University (PU). A person unrelated to PU had entered PU’s girl’s dormitory to sexually harass female students. PU attributed this to the girl’s dormitory having no curfew and soon implemented strict curfew systems. KU followed suit.

Many question the efficacy of the curfew on girl’s dormitories but leaving such doubts aside, most students welcome the new changes made to the dormitory curfew.
