The Korean summer is distinctive with its heavy rain showers. The beauty of a cool rain cannot be mimicked by anything else. Light raindrops set off a romantic vibe in the atmosphere and heavier rain is more calming, evoking emotions and bringing back memories. Rainy days have a different meaning for different people. The Granite Tower (GT) asked four students of Korea University (KU) about their unique memories of rain. We have also encouraged for them to share their favorite things to do and places to go. For those who do not have a particular favor towards the rain, here are some things that can make your rainy day more special and epic.

Kwon Joohyun (’11, English Language and Literature)
I am definitely not a fan of water puddles and wet bags and clothes. That is why I prefer to stay indoors when it is raining. Whenever it rains, it makes me want to have Pajeon with Makgeolli. There is a place near our school called Makgeollijip that sells honey dongdongju and gamja-jeon. It tastes more delicious when it is raining. At night, after the sun has set, I also like to listen to the rain drops at a cafe or my balcony.

Kim Hae Jun(’13, Business Administration)

I have always thought about sitting on my balcony with the door open sipping hot chocolate when it is raining. I would have a comic book open; it has always been something I thought I would do but have never done. Instead, last year when I was studying for college in Noryangjin, the Han River was nearby. I would go under the bridge to clear my thoughts. There are not many people when it is raining, so it is very quiet and soothing.

Youn Jeong Seok (’12, Economics)

I personally like it when it is raining, and I like to listen to ballads, which I like the most. Sometimes when it is not raining cats and dogs, I like walking around a park without an umbrella. I like walking in the rain without an umbrella because getting hit by a few raindrops makes me concentrate well on thinking about the past experiences.

Yoo Joon Soo (’08, Mathematics)
I do not really like the rain. Rain makes me think of my days in military service. I had a hard time breaking up with my first love when I was there. The rain has a way of reminding me of it. Whenever it rains, I prefer to stay at home watching movies. It is more calming, and there is more sentimental value being home by yourself than being out.
