On May 1, Korea University (KU) hosted “The 7th Special Lecture Series” organized by the University Forum of Foreign Affairs and National Security (UFFANS) in the 4.18 Memorial Hall. UFFANS started its activity from 2005 and gave its first lecture in 2006. Not only does it give lectures, but it also holds debate competition, projects and other kinds of activities that give the university students a chance to gain an insight into international affairs and important events, such as the dispute over Dok-do Island.

“The 7th Special Lecture” is named “Provocations of North Korea, Changes in the International society, and Republic of Korea (ROK)”. Nowadays, the atmosphere between the two Koreas is becoming more intense, particularly due to the provocative actions by the third North Korean leader, Kim Jong Eun. Divided into two sessions, this lecture aimed to cover how ROK would respond to its relationship with the United States (U.S.) as well as North Korea. It also covered the realities of North Korea and the background settings as to why North Korea is behaving in an aggressive manner.

The lecture was sponsored by Korea National Diplomatic Academy and had special guest lecturers such as Professor Jeon Jae Sung (Seoul National University, Political Affairs) and Ahn Jung Sik, a reporter from SBS (Seoul Broadcasting System).

A student who attended the lecture, Park Jung Nam (’12, sociology), said, “This conference was a very good opportunity for me to have an understanding about North Korea. I think it is important to know about North Korea before showing negative reactions towards them.”
