In May, Korea University (KU) students are all excited about the famous “Ipselenti, Jiya Hamsung (Roar of Wisdom and Wilderness)” Generally, in this ceremony—a fusion of modernism and tradition—students of KU and guests from other universities altogether enjoy the lively spirit of the school. During Ipselenti, which is held on the last Friday of a week-long school festival, students sing cheering songs, dance with friends, and enjoy the whole day together. Celebrities are also invited to perform. Ipselenti means more than just an event for KU students; when one experiences Ipselenti for the first time, it will linger in one’s memory.

Cho Han Bin (’13, Liberal Arts)

As a freshman, I do not have any experience participating in Ipselenti. I just heard from my seniors that it is probably one of the best experiences that KU students share. I think this year’s Ipselenti will mean the same to me. I anticipate cheering with fellow students and students from Yonsei University (YU) who are coming to Ipselenti, enjoying performances by student clubs, and screaming when celebrities show up. Yet, rather than fancy Idol groups, I hope I get to see artists that spice up the atmosphere. I am very excited that the day of Ipselenti will be a refreshing break from all the mundane activities of normal school life!

Yoo Young Hoon (’12, Computer Science Education)

The col o r “Crimson Red” first comes to mind when I think of Ipselenti. Along with the Annual Ko-Yon Games, I guess Ipselenti is one of the biggest events in KU. I like to feel the “KU spirit” when watching students unite, enjoy the festival, and cheer in their crimson red shirts. As a KU student, Ipselenti has its meaning in that it brings all of us “together”, regardless of majors and age. It is a chance for all the KU students to gather and promote communal, team spirit. Yet, small issues like lining up for Ipselenti, certain majors dominating the best spot, and safety problems should be improved for KU students to enjoy a better, pleasant Ipselenti.

Jeong Daheen (’10, Chemistry)

It reminds m e o f t h e fervent cheering atmosphere when r e c a l l i n g I p s e l e n t i . Ipselenti comes at a perfect time, right after midterms, with great weather! By screaming, cheering with classmates, juniors and seniors, it is an opportunity for KU students to relieve the stress they got from exams and assignments. I think that is why all KU students anticipate May. The only thing that needs to be changed is some minor safety issues and maintaining order during the event.

Koharu Haga (Foreign Exchange Student)

From a  f o r e i g n e r ’ s perspective, Ipselenti was a curious event for me as an exchange student. From my experience, I can say that Ipselenti is the biggest annual event that represents KU and KU spirit. I was breath-taken by the tremendous display of school spirit, fantastic cheers— especially when the students linked arms and completed dances in unison to songs played by a live band— and amazing performances. Especially, by the end of the night, I was overwhelmed by K-Pop performances! I have to admit, KU’s Ipselenti has a great program, passionate cheers in a good venue.
