Walking around campus, students might have seen big yellow banners or posters that say “Courses that will change your day, 0 credit classes.” These courses are organized by the student councils of College of Liberal Arts, Education and Medicine, and are expected to provide a special experience for Korean University (KU) students.

Students nowadays are in constant competition with each other to get good jobs. In order to get into the best-profiled jobs, students are aware that they have to get good grades in their courses. Therefore, taking courses is not just about learning but also vying for the best grade possible with each other. These special “0 credit courses” provide students with the opportunity to actually learn something without the pressure of competing against classmates.

From topics about independent films to sexual education, the courses cover a variety of topics related to each department. Most of the courses will be taught by KU professors, while there will be special guest lecturers from different relevant associations. These courses are offered free of charge and are strictly to give students a liberating experience of education without any external interference.

Song Han Sol (’11, Sociology), who is a member of “You and I, High-kick”, the student council of College of Liberal Arts, said, “We realize that nowadays many students pay expensive tuition fees and do not even get to take the courses they want. Even if they do, they are bound down by the fact that they are in constant competition with each other for grades. So, we wanted to provide our fellow students courses that were free of all restrictions. Also, we wanted students to think about the value and purpose of real education.”

These courses will be held from April 29 to June 5 and are open to any KU students who sign up beforehand. In order to register, students will have to visit http://goo.gl/Y36LM and fill out an online form.
