On March 18, the 46th Korea University StudentAssociation (KUSA) held a pressconferencein front of the Student Union Building. The KUSA, as the student council president Hwang Soon Young (’10,Political Science and International Relations) announced, has decided to dedicate this month,March, in order to reform the education system for the students.

On behalfof the students who gathered at the venue, Hwang made a speech in front offellow students. Hwang said,“Students all have the rights to claim what is properly theirs,” and mentioned problems such ascourse registration and tuition fees.

Asmost students have experienced, the course registration for this new semesterwas a disaster. The server froze and many students were confused as to why theserver was not functioning properly. Asa result, many students failed to successfully register for the courses. Tothis matter Hwang said, “It only takes a tiny bit of the school’s budget to fixthis problem, approximately 1 million won, but the school has not announced to take any action tofix the problem yet.”

Thereis also the problem of tuition fees, which have always been the center ofcontroversy. Hwang mentioned in his speech that there is no transparency in howthe school handles the tuitions it gets from students. He also stated that the residue of the tuitionfees does not go back to the students but goes to the school foundation. In addition, theschool always had a lower rate of giving out scholarship compared to the highrate oftuitionfees.

Afterthe pressconference,KUSA moved to the 4.18 Memorial Hall tothe Student Affairs Department in order to deliver theirdemands. Hwang leaded the rest of KUSA and handed over the papers to thedepartment that showed the demands of the students, including the rights toknow how the tuition fees are allocated.
