Today Typhoon Bolaven hit Korea. Bolaven arrived at the shores of Korea at 3 P.M. Monday. After advancing northwards, Bolaven made its closest approach to Seoul at 2 P.M. Tuesday. Authorities warned the public about the magnitude of the typhoon from days before. Yet, there was less damage done to the school property than expected. This was due to Typhoon Bolaven slowing down before it made its approach to Seoul.

In the case of Korea University (KU), the measures taken beforehand by the school administration staff went a long way in preventing substantial damage. The school issued an official warning on KU Portal Information Depository (KUPID) that included information on how to act during a typhoon. Students were advised not to use their umbrellas, for it may hinder their ability to see any flying debris up ahead. KU also reinforced parts of buildings that may be vulnerable to strong wind.

However, despite efforts made by the school, there was some damage done. The ceiling tiles in the lobby of Anam dormitories fell after constant turbulence from the typhoon. The dormitories and its administration staff have now prohibited students from entering the lobby area as well as shutting down the main entrance of the Frontier House. While there was damage done to the dormitories, the situation was contained and the administration staff quickly responded by keeping students away. Overall, the damage done was minimal considering the initial concerns regarding Typhoon Bolaven.

Students must not let their guard down yet. Not only is Typhoon Bolaven still close by, but there is a new typhoon advancing northwards. Forecasts expect the next typhoon, Tembin, to approach the Korean shores on around August 30. Unlike Typhoon Bolaven, Tembin is expected to bring much more rain on its course. KU needs to put special care into facilities management in preparation for future damage. The season of typhoons is not over, but with precautions from both the school and the students, KU may minimize any damage and avoid casualties.
