On February 28, the 2017 Korea University (KU) Entrance Ceremony was held in the Tiger Dome. During the ceremony, Kim Tae Won (’00, Sociology), industry head of the Consumer Products and Industry team of Google, ascended the podium and spoke to the freshmen about life in KU and beyond. Initially, Kim recounted his college experiences, emphasizing the feeling of joy he had when he entered KU and his conflict with his parents over his major, which was unpopular at the time. He advised freshmen to live a novelist’s life, full of creativity and freedom, as opposed to a typical life mired in repetition and banality.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of learning to make peace with the fact that there are bound to be those who are difficult to deal with, claiming that this is the first step toward maturity. Lastly, he implored freshmen to focus on learning and growth rather than opposition and competition. Kim’s speech was met with much enthusiasm from the freshmen gathered at the Tiger Dome. Apart from Kim, President Yeom Jae Ho took to the podium to give an address on the future of KU, and the freshmen who entered with exceptionally high scores were given awards as well.
