CyKor, Korea University (KU) Cyber Defense’s student hacker club, won the grand prize in SECCON 2016 Final CTF, a hacking defense championship, held from January 27 to 29, 2017. Four members of CyKor, Lim * Won (’15, Cyber Defense), Jin * Hwi (’15, Cyber Defense), Kwon * (’14, Cyber Defense), and Lee * Won (’13, Cyber Defense) were the members who earned the glory of winning the championship.

A total of 4,956 people from 99 countries gathered in Tokyo Denki University to participate in the 2016 SECCON tournament. Five teams were qualified for the finals, four of which were Korean teams. The finals were played by targeting six servers provided by the competition organizers. When a team captures the server, the team gets attacked from other teams trying to interfere with the server. CyKor kept a comfortable lead throughout the game and won the tournament with ease.

In preparation for the event, they worked on numerous problems specifically designed for SECCON, with some members even purchasing high performance computers. These efforts paid off and CyKor won a precious victory. After winning the championship, the four participants of CyKor gathered their voices and said “Winning always feels good. Competing with world-class hackers is in itself a great honor. We feel rewarded to be the champion among such eminent participants.”
