The 2016 Ko-Yon Rugby was held on September 24, at the Mokdong Sports Complex. The game was similar to a tug-of-war, with both the Korea University (KU) and Yonsei University (YU) team making threatening tries and defensive acts.

In the first quarter, YU made threatening try attempts with high speed, dodging the tightly knit defense moves of KU. Jang Jeong Min (’13, Yonsei, Wing), outpacing the KU defenses, was successful at earning a try. In addition, Lee Si Young (’13, Yonsei, S.H.) succeeded in a conversion kick, giving YU a seven point ahead of KU. Not long after, Yoo Ji Hoon (’13, Physical Education, Flanker) stole the ball from YU and succeeded in a try. Followed by a conversion kick by Han Gu Min, KU earned seven points, leaving the two teams in a tie. However with Bang Seong Yoon’s (‘14, Yonsei, S.O) penalty kick which resulted in the achievement of three points, YU scored 10 whereas KU still remained seven.

The second quarter was where twists occured. One of the players that was most contributive in making KU not only recover but also outrun YU was Jeong Bu Hyun (’13, Physical Education, S.O), captain of the ruby team. He was able to block try attempting players of YU with strong and insightful tackles. He was also fast enough to outrun all the defense players of YU to score a witty try. Han Gu Min also succeeded in his conversion kick, which eventually made KU in the lead again with a four point lead.
However, there was once more a twist in the game as YU received a penalty kick which earned them a total of 10 more points, widening the score once more. (KU 14-YU 20) Then, Jang Yong Heung (‘13, Yonsei, Wing) successfully made a try, along with the success of a conversion kick that earned YU seven points. At this point of time the score was 14-27, with YU in the lead.

Towards the end of the last quarter, Jeong Bu Hyun, and Lee Jin Kyu (’13, Physical Education, CTB) successfully stole the ball out from the heavily crowded YU defense, passing it to Kim Jin Hyuk (’14, Physical Education, CTB) who made a try. Han Gu Min’s conversion kick earned two more points, making the score 21-27. Then, suddenly with Lee Jin Kyu’s success in a try, the score gap nearly closed, with YU ahead of KU by only one point. Unfortunately, Han Gu Min’s conversion kick this time failed. The game ended with YU leading with a score of 27, while KU was only one point behind.
It was a close game, and the enthusiasm the players of both team showed aroused many applauds and roars from the crowd.
