The 48th Mock Congress of the Republic of Anam, hosted by the students of Political Science and International Relations, was held on September 5, at the Inchon Memorial Hall of Korea University (KU). In this year’s mock congress, 28 students, including 22 actors, successfully performed on the theme of “Reforming the National Assembly for a Mature Representative Democracy,” and deepened KU students’ awareness of democracy.

Drawing the curtains with the words of encouragement by an alumni, the head of the academics department first explained the legislations, such as the Act of Congress Advancement, that were to be referred to during the performance. The mock congress was divided into two sections of different genres. The first section was a one-act play which illustrated the process of parliamentary reformation, with the 20th general election as the motif. The second section was shown in the form of an Assembly Plenary Session, where the actors, each representing certain social characters, debated on the legislations related to the theme.

Park Min Seok (’15, Political Science and International Relations), the Chairperson of the Preparatory Committee, mentioned that, “As the first mock congress of Korea, we have given critical analysis on Korea’s economics and politics of the last half century. The year 2016 was the year of the 20th general election. In the 48th Congress of the Republic of Anam, we aimed to identify whether Korea’s representative democracy truly reflects the public opinion.”
