The KakaoTalk sexual offenders, accused in June, are set to receive punishment. A temporary student representative meeting was urgently held on July 17 to discuss the punishment. It was concluded that the offenders will have their identities partially revealed, although the extent to this divulgence was not specified, and will be restricted from autonomous university activities. Also, they will not be allowed to vote in school elections or run for any positions of the student bodies.

The offenders were accused for sexually objectifying fellow Korea University (KU) female students, verbally imitating sexually harassing circumstances, and even voyeuring women in public places. The offenders apologized publicly via a daeja-bo, which still aroused much criticism. Further investigation on the issue took place with the cooperation of the victims.

Despite voices calling for the revealing of the entire identities of the offenders, some students are worried that the punishment could cause further impairment on the offenders. The President of the Korea University Student Administration (KUSA), Park Se Hoon (’13, Political Science and International Relations), insisted that he will “minimize disturbances caused by revelations of the offenders’ identities.” Further discussion is expected among student leaders to determine the level of disclosure.
