Korea University (KU) Liberal Arts College students have fallen victim to a lack of built-in air conditioning. “In one of my classes, we are forced to open the windows because our classroom doesn’t have built-in air conditioners.” Said an anonymous Liberal Arts student. Many other students who take classes in the Liberal Arts building, regardless of major, have professed that the classrooms in the Liberal Arts building feel stuffier than those in other buildings.

According to one of KU’s central heating and cooling administrators, only standing air conditioners have been installed in the Liberal Arts building. This is because any construction project that could potentially damage the Liberal Arts building, including installing built-in air conditioners, have been prohibited ever since the building was designated as a cultural asset. Yet standing air conditioners are far and between, and even the ones that have been installed are woefully inadequate to combat the scorching heat.

The administrator said that, as of now, the central heating and cooling administrators are compensating for the lack of built-in air conditioning by activating the standing air conditioners for a longer period. However, the administrator admits that they can only go so far. “As long as the Liberal Arts building is a cultural asset, there is nothing we can do. It is especially sad since we know that the Liberal Arts building, compared to other buildings, is extremely old fashioned and in need of remodeling.” He concluded.
