“I think I have found an X-man…… What do I do now?” Numerous posts popped up on Korea University's (KU) Bamboo Forest from freshmen reporting that they had found an X-man in their Kakao Talk group chat room. X-man, also called fraktsiya, a Russian word for secret agent, refers to sophomore or junior students pretending to be freshmen. They participate in meetings or outings before school starts in March. Unless their identity is disclosed, they do not reveal themselves until the Saetao, or freshman orientation camp. What do KU students think about the entire affair?

“I can summarize my X-man experience with the expression“guilty pleasure.” When I was a freshman last year, three of our upper classmen were pretending to be freshmen until our great discovery. One of my friends stumbled upon a group picture of the senior students on Facebook wearing last year’s school t-shirt. I did feel a little betrayed then, but thought it would have been so much fun. Now I am one of the three X-men for the year 2015 and went to a freshman meeting a few days ago. I felt bad for deceiving them but tried to give them some information and break the ice. To be honest, I personally had so much fun faking that I was a freshman, which is why I call the experience a guilty pleasure. I do feel a little guilty, but the fun and pleasure it gives me are too great to reveal the truth so easily.”

“X-man does not seem relevant to me. I am not very interested in the whole matter. Last year, when I was a freshman, our senior students told us that they did not have any X-man. Most of us did not believe them so we made wrongful accusations amongst ourselves. It turned out that the senior students were indeed telling the truth—we did not have any X man in our major. Looking back, it was fun trying to find out who might be the X- man, but I do not think that it is a big deal.”

“We did not have X-man when I was a freshman. I personally do not like the practice and feel glad that we did not have any X-man in our year. After X-men are revealed, it makes the situation more awkward rather than ice breaking or strengthening the bond between older and younger students. If the purpose of X-man is trying to get to know each other, I think it is better to participate more in school activities once the school starts in March. Everyone gets more tense and uncomfortable as the freshmen are suspicious of each other, and the older students have to worry about not offending new students and keeping the right balance.

“X-man is one of pranks senior students pull on the freshmen students. It is kind of a joke really, so I am not against it. It can be kind of fun both for the senior students and the freshmen students as long as they keep a few things in mind. X-men should be more careful so they do not get caught early. If students want to be X-men they should try to look as authentic as possible—deactivating Facebook and so forth. On top of that, in order to prevent the newly arrived students from feeling too deceived or mocked the X men should try to get along well with the freshmen.”
