As every Korea University (KU) student know, Yonsei Milk is the representing product of Yonsei University (YU). However, what some students may not know, especially those from the main campus, is that there is also bread for KU students located in the Science Department Campus. Surprisingly, this is not a privately owned bakery but is a bakery offered by the school. Even with a small size, GoDaeBang has preserved its tight relationship with the KU students for a long time.

GoDaeBang—the name of the Korea University bakery—is located in two places, the Hana Square and Aegineung. Just like the name suggests, it has a long history representing Korea University, originating in 1977. It first originated from the science laboratory of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, now changed to the College of Life Sciences and Biotechnology. During the time where there were no experiments, students and staff voluntarily made bread using the facilities there for their own goods. However, as it became popular, the school branded it to GoDaeBang and actually provided a location for sales, expanding the business.

The bread is made every day with reliable ingredients, and that has been in business for more than five years. Also, the best part is the reasonable price for KU students. As GoDaeBang is not primarily for huge profit but more for student welfare, the price usually ranges from one thousand won to three thousand won. Kim Soo Joung, who worked long for GoDaeBang and is taking care of the administrative parts, as well, told The Granite Tower (GT), “The reason that it can keep the low price is because the profit is minimized to satisfy only the labor wages. The rest of the expenditure, such as rent, is provided by the school. However, even with the low cost, the quality is still maintained, as there are almost one hundred kinds of bread, baking about forty to fifty kinds each day.”

After the Annual Ko-Yon Games, where the student council offered GoDaeBang bread to KU students, there were some inquiries whether the students from the main campus could enjoy bread from GoDaeBang as well. Kim Sewon (’13, English Language Education), who was impressed by GoDaeBang bread, said, “Before the games, I did not know there were such things. It would be great if the main campus also has something similar for the students to eat, something light but at a low price.”

In the past there were some of those efforts to publicize GoDaeBang for all the students in KU. There was an attempt for the guards to sell GoDaeBang bread to students in each department they were responsible for, and those guards could use the service charge for their own goods. However, there were some side effects to this measure and it had to be stopped. Professor Choi Yongsung (Department of Food and Resource Economics), who is in charge of GoDaeBang, said, “It is almost impossible to open a new market in the main campus, considering profits. However, we are thinking of novel ways to expand the business such as vending machines, but it is still at the indecisive stage.

Despite this circumstance, GoDaeBang offers events relating to the special holidays prepared and advertises in Korea University Portal to Information Depository (KUPID). These products are specially prepared for presents having good quality such as Pepero—Korean cookie that looks like a stick—in November. This December, GoDaeBang is selling Christmas cakes for KU students when pre-ordered from KUPID, cakes with reasonable price and great taste; it will make your Christmas ever sweeter and warmer.
